Motion capture (or performance capture if you're simultaneously capturing facial expressions and a vocal performance), is still in it's infancy in the Netherlands. Despite this, I love working as a motion capture actor. My background as a performer is very movement based, and I still love taking on roles that demand it. On stage, this might mean creating creature performances for the three Ghosts of Christmas in 'A Christmas Carol' (OTC, 2022). On screen, that means mocap.
Just like with voiceover, it's true that any actor can put on a mocap suit and move around. However, a true understanding of what it means to inhabit another body, be it human or creature, is a technique unto itself. I love days where I can be motion capture actor as the perfect compliment to voiceover. It's a chance to think with my body, and truly play.
In 2022, I brought together writers, directors, students, programmers, sound technicians and animators to see what we could make with motion capture technology.
The result ended up being selected for Imagine Film Festival 2022!
